Update on December/January Courses
Including Write into Mystery & a New Year's Writing Retreat!
Hello, everyone!
I hope you’re all doing well/hanging in there. I am taking a break from posting my weekly “imagination || craft” emails until December, but I wanted to let you know about a few opportunities.
Below is the updated lineup of our courses for winter 2023. Grab your spot in a workshop today, as an early holiday gift to yourself!
The Writer as Researcher , 5-week course on Wet Ink platform
Instructor: Megan Baxter
December 11th-January 20th
A five-week introduction to the techniques, tools, and use of research in creative writing, open to all genres. Through weekly lessons which include written lectures, reading, research activities, and writing prompts, this course is designed to help any writer who is embarking on a research journey. We’ll begin by examining brainstorming and associative techniques to help jump-start research then detail the best practices, and practical consideration for conducting interviews, traveling as a researcher, and using source material from books, archives, and online sources.
Finally, we’ll explore how we can use research creatively through world-building, conversation, and collaboration. Each week you’ll receive instructor feedback on your research activity and creative writing prompts. You’ll also get the chance to participate in an online peer workshop with fellow writers and researchers. This course is a great guide for writers of all genres who are considering conducting creative research.
The course is entirely asynchronous, through the Wet Ink platform. Log on according to your own schedule to participate in weekly activities and discussions.
Students loved Megan Baxter’s last course, Memoir in Collage, and we’re so lucky to have her back for The Writer as Researcher.
$300. Payment plans available. Seats are limited.

NEWLY LISTED! Writing Beyond the Known: Exploring the Possible Through Speculative Nonfiction//Self-Guided
January 21 - February 19, 2024
$45 early bird price through December 20, 2023
Formerly offered through Creative Nonfiction, I’m now offering my Speculative Nonfiction course as a self-guided class through Muse. The self-guided version I designed for Creative Nonfiction has been hugely popular— I have received lovely feedback!— and I’m excited to offer it here!
In this self-guided course you will explore the elastic quality of the essay form as you delve into the ways metaphor, speculation, and imaginative play can enliven your writing and help you explore your values, fascinations, and imaginings. In our approach to speculative nonfiction, we will work with strategies for capturing the slippery quality of the individual writer’s passage through time and the sometimes surreal quality of existence. Students will experiment with techniques such as unexpected figurative language; associative memory; leaps across time; combining genres and mediums; and the writing of daydreams, fantasies, dreams, and imaginings.
Four-week self-guided course on the Wet Ink Platform. The class will be asynchronous, meaning that you will be able to read and respond to materials on your own schedule. You will receive written comments on your work from your peers. New lessons will open on 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11. The course site will close on 2/19.
Additionally, I am offering a course through Writers.com in December:
Write into Mystery: Writing Flash Memoir about Wonder and the Unexplained
Opens December 6, 2023 | 4 Weeks
Join me to write short passages of prose that explore the mystery woven through all of our lives: the mysterious, unexpected, or wondrous that exists in our everyday experience. Learn how to share what is strangest and most alive from your own life, and how your life-based writing can explore the connections between disparate experiences. This class runs on the Wet Ink platform. [Note: This class is similar to Approaching Mystery, which I have offered through Muse and CNF.]
