Spaces left in Lyric Essay! And a Generative Writing Workshop this weekend
Plus: Send me links to work you started with me
Hello!
A quick note: If you’re new to Muse with JPC, this is one of the “Muse Offerings” newsletters I send out once or twice a month. If you would like to choose which section(s) of the newsletter you subscribe to, there are instructions for that here.
I wanted to point you toward my upcoming classes in July & August. You can browse all the Muse on the website here. And you can see my upcoming course “Write into Mystery” here. And I’ll list the upcoming classes in order below.
Also, if you've written a piece inspired by one of my prompts (either from a class or my newsletter), and that piece was published in a journal or magazine— and you wouldn't mind me including the publication in a list I'm compiling for a Substack post— would you mind sending me a link? I know and can find many of them, but I know I've missed things. You can either post a link in the comments below (and we can all enjoy them!) or email me by responding to this message. Thank you!
All my best and thank you for being here,
Joanna
Upcoming courses
Drop-in generative writing workshops
July 27th, 1-3:30PM Eastern. The generative writing workshops happen over Zoom and are only $40 ($25 for paid subscribers). I give participants short readings, which we very briefly discuss, and we do timed writing exercises. Participants in these sessions tend to produce rich, strange, and exciting drafts to work with. The constraints of timed writing prompts can really help people make new and interesting connections in their minds and writing! Students can volunteer to read their drafts, but this is strictly optional. The next one of these is this Saturday, July 27th, 1-3:00PM ET. (This weekend!)
Writing the Lyric Essay [9 spots available]
Opens July 29th, five-week asychronous course. Starting Monday, I’m offering a guided version of my Lyric Essay course. I likely won’t offer this one again until next year, so please join us if you’re interested! The five-week class opens July 29th. The sale price this week is $250 through July 29th, with payment plans available.
Students go through the course on their own schedule on the Wet Ink platform online, interacting with the instructor and other students in writing.
Each week provides:
discussions of assigned readings and other general writing topics with peers
written lectures and a selection of readings
Some weeks also include:
the opportunity to submit two essays of 1000 and 2500 words each for instructor and peer comments
additional optional writing exercises
(You don’t need to be present at any specific times/dates, though there will be the one optional Zoom meeting, which I’ll hold on August 7th, 7-8 pm Eastern.)
Writing from the Unconscious
August 3rd & August 10th. (You can take either or both.) I’m also excited to announce this new Zoom-based workshop, coming in August. Together we will write using inspiration from tarot, dreams, guided meditations, and “automatic writing.” There will be two sessions, Saturday August 3rd and August 10th, 1:00-3:30PM Eastern, and the sessions can be taken separately or together. There will be a limit of 15 participants.
Below are the subtopics for each session:
Session 1// August 3rd: Tarot, oracles, and parts of self
Session 2// August 10th: Dreams and guided meditation
More information can be found on the Muse website.
Write into Mystery: Writing Flash Memoir about Wonder & the Unexplained
Opens August 28th. This class is adapted from the “Approaching Mystery” course I designed and taught for Creative Nonfiction. Since their education wing is defunct, I’m now offering it through writers.com.
